SAFER PRODUCTS

There is an enormous demand for fragrance-free and safer products. I have many to share with you. By law, the word fragrance, parfum or perfume is required to be on the list of ingredients, yet what *constitutes* fragrance? In other words, how many unregulated and harmful ingredients could be in any given fragranced product? Below is a list of some products I have personally found to be much safer.

Note:  Always check ingredients on *unscented* products, as some of them contain masking fragrance chemicals, which are usually listed on the label. Dove unscented soap is one that readily comes to mind, as well as many alleged *unscented* hairsprays. This is why reading labels is necessary, always.

First I would like to mention that *pure* essential oils can be used in lieu of today's modern age designer perfumes. For example, I buy small attractive spray bottles, fill them with water, pour in four to five drops of my favorite pure essential oil, and use them in my bathrooms. I've also found *natural* potpourri at my local Wal-Mart for only $1.00. It smells nice and is full of beautiful assorted colors. I've purchased several gorgeous pillar candles online from the HampdenStore.com. They also carry scented, but the unscented are much safer, and they come in many attractive colors and sizes.

LOTIONS:

Aveeno fragrance-free lotion
Lubriderm fragrance-free lotion
Eucerin Dry Skin Therapy Calming Creme
Complex 15 face cream (found on www.drugstore.com)

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin #30 SPF sunscreen
SolBar PF Cream #50 sunscreen (found online)
Some Banana Boat sunscreens
Some Oil of Olay sunscreens

Always check the list of ingredients to be sure fragrance or parfum is not listed.

DEODORANTS:

Arm & Hammer Unscented
Almay fragrance-free gel
CRYSTAL Body Deodorant Spray (No aluminum Chlorohydrate, Hypoallergenic, fragrance & Paraben Free

Also, many safer deodorants can be found in health food stores, such as Vitamin Cottage or Wild Oats.

SHAMPOOS & CONDITIONERS:

Shampoos, conditioners and various other hair care products are more difficult to find in local grocery stores. I will help you out here.

For dandruff shampoo, Neutrogena T/Sal in the RED box only.

Pure Essentials (found only in health food stores)

I've heard that Kiss My Face has safer shampoos and conditioners. I have not personally tried them.

Note: There are more shampoos and conditioners at many health food stores, and I will list some of my favorite websites.

HAIRSPRAYS & HAIR GELS:

Clinique has many fragrance-free products, hairspray being one of them. I buy Clinique hairspray, non-aerosol. (No ethanol, butane, phthalates* or fragrance).

* Phthalates are chemicals in many fragranced products that can cause birth defects.

PSI Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc. is where I purchase my Free and Clear hair gel.  They carry many other great products. Their phone number is 1-800-325-8332.  There website is www.psico.com/

SOAPS AND LAUNDRY:

Dove fragrance free soap for sensitive skin.

Seventh Generation, ALL free and clear, Oxiclean for washing clothes. I have found some other brands that are cross contaminated, and although they claim to be fragrance-free, they are strongly perfumed.

Dryer balls are great for replacing fabric softeners and dryers sheets both. You can find them at most stores, such as Target and Wal-Mart.

AIR FRESHENERS:

Check at health food stores for safer air fresheners, or make you own, as I do, with small spray bottles filled with water and pour 4-5 drops of your favorite pure essential oil.

MAKE-UP:

I use mineral make-up. I will list some websites below. Cover Girl also make a fragrance-free foundation. Again, please check labels for list of ingredients.

MORE TIPS:

More nail polishes are coming out that are formaldehyde and toluene free. Toluene is highly toxic and is in many perfumes and various fragranced products.

Find dry cleaners that do not use solvents. Perfumes are solvents, and they contain high VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) as in paint, pain thinners and varnish to name a few.

Bon Ami for cleaning sinks and tubs. Works great!

HOPE'S Premium Wood Care is solvent free, zero VOC, non-flammable, no chemical odor, and moisterizes wood.

Mixing one half hydrogen peroxide to one half water in a spray bottle is the best window and glass cleaner I have ever used. It not only cleans and disinfects, but doesn't steak. And vinegar is also a great cleaner and disinfectant.

Swiffer DRY cloths work great for dusting.

HELPFUL WEBSITES FOR SAFER PRODUCTS:

One of my favorites is www.Alerg.com. They carry an array of fragrance free products, even travel sized products.

My favorite mineral make-up line is www.mineralsilk.com. There are plenty of mineral make-ups now, but watch out for parabens, which can mimic estrogen, therfore putting women at risk for breast cancer. With Mineral Silk, you can buy small sample products, which is really nice. Another great site is www.smokymountainminerals.com
